Interview with Mr Pablico, a Social Study teacher in Palmer.

Why is Social Study important to learn

With the constant evolution of technology, informations are being more accessible and easy to find for the general public, but that has also caused fake infomations to spread on the internet, Socials will teach them the biases the world have and how to spot fake news.

Connections with students​

In case students are falling behind in progress, Mr. Pablico will first observe the type of learner the student is, then help them in specific way, one thing he does is to ask the student to teach the content back to him, ensuring they understand it. He also include pop culture like music into the course to make it relatable to students.

How is Social Study interesting to students

Social Study is rich in stories and tale, like poems that First Nations pass down generation to generation, students can have a more diverse perspective of the world by hearing voices that they doesn't hear often.

Skills

Students will learn skills like verifying sources, communicating in a professional manner, and fact checking people. But Mr. Pablico says memorizing dates shouldn't be a huge concern for students, as understanding what and why events happen is more crucial to their learning journey.

Summary

Mr. Pablico makes the course engaging to students by introducing pop culture to relates to teenagers, studying stories and tales and teaching skills like fact checking that would be useful for the majority of occupations that people would pursue in the future. At the end, Mr. Pablico tries to get students to be more conscious about potential biases that people use to persuade and mislead the public.
