ELS Courses

Explaination for all of the 13 literary courses offered in Palmer Secondary throughout grade 8 to 12.

Humanity (grade 8)

Students at grade 8 will choose either humanity 8 or incentive humanity 8. Both course will be focusing on the middle ages to renaissance, and geographic knowledge learnt in grade 7. Students will read mostly non-fiction literature like poetry or historical text to strengthen their understanding of the time periods.​

Grade 10:

Unlike previous courses, students at grade 10 will have two separate courses to choose from: Composition and Spoken Language 10 and Literary Study and Creative Writing 10. Students will work both individually and collaboratively to compose meaningful text, and they will read literature by famous authors like Shakespeare to learn from their intentional use of poetic devices

Grade 12:

English 12 is separated into 4 course! English Studies 12, English First People 12, Literary Study 12 and Creative Writing 12. We have an exclusive page dedicated to English First People 12, so we will be focusing on the other 3 for this article. For English Studies 12:

Student will focus on the topic of identity, students will understand the diverse factors that change identity.

English Language (Grade 9)

students at grade 9 will choose either english language 9 or incentive english language 9. Both course will be focusing more on literature more than history unlike humanity. Which means that students will be reading more fictional text to learn writing styles author use.

Grade 11:

- Grade 11 english literary study will delve deeper into specific literary works and their authors, students will further improve in their development as global educated citizens. While the incentive ela 11 will focus on english language manipulation for specific types of audiences.

Grade 12: Literary Study and Creative Writing

For English Literary Study 12, students will learn to read increasingly complex texts, and a broader variety of literature, building up on past literary study courses. For creative writing, students will publish work in real-life context, and explore personal and cultural identities, memories, and stories, in a wide range of genres.

Summary:

Palmer offers numerous english courses throughout grade 8 - 12, and courses relates to each other, from building the foundation of english to complex text analyze, each courses gives you a gradual boost to your language capability. English literary study have a major sub-course; creative writing, that students can choose in grade 10 and 12, where they will focus on learning writing technique from authors and skillfully execute these techniques, whether it's poetic devices or figure of speech. Creative technique could be chosen for students who wish for go for a writing related career like author.
