Why is Geography important to Social Study?
Geography provides spatial context, like how the geographical terrain can impact trading routes or even war outcomes, it is one of the major factors of historical events throughout history.

Geography can explain the what, where and why climate change occurs, as well as natural and human factors that accelerate or reverse climate change.

Practical Skills
Geography students can open up career opportunities like sustainability related occupations, it is also useful to know general location of countries and major events that caused geographical changes

Critical Thinking
Students will learn techniques like analyzing sources, and evaluating evidence to develop conclusion or opinion. Analyzing bias in arguments or propagandas can also encourage critical thinking.

Summary
Geography is a major topic taught even before grade 8, but students will go from memorizing country names, historical events, to forming ideas from resource and reasoning in later geography.
